On
an old house just at the outskirts of an Eastern City, a woman in her
early twenties stares at the crumbling old wooden house. A sign just
beside an old mailbox reads for sale with the contact number to call
under it. Several minutes later, the woman leaves that place and
headed to town. The town proper resembles the streets of San
Francisco, California only smaller. While walking past some
establishments along a downhill road, the woman seems to be looking
for something.
"It
should be around here somewhere..."
she mumbled as she keeps looking for a sign and holds on to a little
piece of paper with TOTO hand written to it and an address. Half past
4 in the afternoon the light that emanated from the sun turned the
surroundings into light orange, the woman found a little bar named
TOTO a few blocks down just beside a dock facing the sea.
"Found
it..."
she said as she stood in front of the glass door with a sign that
says "We're
Open".
She hesitated to go in at first but gathered the guts to open the
sliding door. The place has a nice atmosphere. Dim lights from the
floor made the place a cozy place to unwind and relax together with
some contemporary songs being played. She is greeted by a woman
wearing glasses wearing an apron.
"Hi.
You're the first customer for this day. What's your order?"
the woman said with a warm smile.
"I'll
have one hot chocolate and 2 slices of Tira Misu cake."
"Great.
I'll deliver it to your seat so take a seat anywhere."
"I'll
just sit here near the counter."
she said and placed her things on top of the table beside the cash
register.
"Okay
be right back."
the girl said and prepared the order.
"So
this is the place... I wonder where I could find him."
she said. A few minutes later her orders were served.
"Here
you are enjoy."
the lady said.
"Thanks."
she said.
"You're
not from around here are you?"
"I
was. This is the first time I've been here since 7 years ago."
"I'm
Khaei. What's your name?"
she said and sat in front of her.
"I'm
Marie. Your Tira Misu taste really good. I love it..."
she said with a smile.
"Thanks
Marie. So what brings you back here? I've only been here for a year
so I don't have much knowledge of this place"
Khaei said.
"Actually
I'm looking for someone but I don't know if the person is still here.
The only place that a friend of mine told me he'd be is this place."
Marie said.
"Well
maybe I could help, there are a lot of people hanging around here
every night so maybe one of them would be that person you're looking
for"
"Yeah
maybe... So
do you run this place alone?"
Marie said.
"Nope.
Me and my boyfriend run this place. He should arrive in a couple of
minutes... I'll be right back just make yourself cozy okay? Here you
can turn on the television if you get bored. I'll give you your bill
later."
Khaei said and went inside the kitchen.
"Thanks."
Marie said and turned on the television.
"A
little too trusting and kind but I like her..."
she said referring to Khaei. She watched some tv shows for a few
minutes then Khaei came back.
"Hey
sorry I have to leave you here for a while. I just have to fix some
things inside..."
Khaei said.
"That's
alright. You said earlier that you and your boyfriend manage
this place, where is he?"
Marie said.
"Working
until past 5. He should be here later. Why?"
Khaei asked a little bit surprised by Marie suddenly asking her
that.
"Oh
just wondering."
she said.
Later people started coming in the place. Khaei was
busy tending to orders and cleaning tables. Marie watches her and
notices a smile on her face.
"Seems
like she's enjoying everything that she's doing..."
she mumbled. Then a guy entered and sat just two seats away from her
got a glass and poured water in it. Marie was a bit surprised not
recognizing who it was. The guy had a long hair until his neck and
wears a jacket.
"Khaei..."
the guy said. Marie recognized the voice in an instant. She trembled
a bit upon hearing his voice.
"Hey,
didn't notice you come in..."
she said and hugged him.
"You
were busy with those... How was the first hour? Already this much
customer huh?"
he said and held her hands.
"Yup.
We have a long way to go till 10PM"
Khaei said. She turned to Marie and told him she was the first
customer for the day.
"Hey
Marie, he's my boyfriend, Rylie. The
one I mentioned to you earlier..."
Marie couldn't look at him because and decided to face him only to
find a seemingly calm and friendly face.
"Rylie..."
she said in her mind.
"Hi.
Welcome to TOTO..."
Rylie said.
"T-Thank
you."
Marie said. Looking at him.
"It's
him no mistake about it... He just changed his name."
Rylie and Khaei went on to manage that shop. Marie asked them if
there's a nearby inn she could go to.
"I'll
take her to grandma Mary. She could give her a discount..."
Rylie said. Khaei gave him a thumbs up, Marie was a bit
surprised.
Later while they were walking towards the inn a few
blocks from there, Rylie talked to her.
"Why
did you come here?"
he said with a seemingly annoyed voice.
"I
wanted to see you... And maybe we could talk..."
she said.
"Talk
about what? I have nothing to say to you Marie..."
he said.
"Well
I do!"
she said in a loud voice.
"What
then?"
he said in a cold monotone voice. Marie is in the brink of crying
that time.
"I'm
sorry... For everything..."
she said and started crying behind her long hair. Rylie kept silent
for a while.
"Sorry?
Your sorry won't change anything. It won't bring back all the things
I've sacrificed and lost just for you. "
he said.
"I
know... But I just have to tell you all of this so I could find peace
of mind... Why can't you see my point that I did all of
those for us, so we could be happy..."
"Peace
of mind? Give me a break... As far as I know you still haven't
changed one bit."
"How
could you be so cold?..."
Marie said.
"I'm
not... I'm being true to my feelings. You keep telling me back then
to grow up, I'm immature, look at yourself, look at your attitude.
You are the immature between us two."
Rylie said.
"W-What?
how could you--"
Marie said.
"The
inn's just around the corner... This is where I leave you Marie.
Don't come to me again. I love Khaei, more than I did love you
before. For so many reasons also. She loved me for who I really am,
may it be my worst side or my best side... And i'm marrying her. You
wasted your time going back here Marie, there's nothing left for you
here... You threw them all away a long time ago remember? Everything.
All for your precious dream"
he said and was about to leave. Marie slapped him.
"How
dare you?... You don't know the hardships I've been through this past
years."
she said.
"How
egoistic... Ptu!"
He said and spit some blood from his lips.
"Why
are you doing this to me? Why
are you making things so damn hard for me?"
Marie said.
"Stop
wasting my time already... I don't have time for you and your
ego..."
"If
Khaei knew about us--"
she said..
"What?
What will you do? She's not stupid Marie and she's not immature
too... Leave her out of this and don't ever show your face in our
shop..."
he said and left her. Marie didn't sleep in the room she rented that
night crying and regretting. Everything.
That very next day she
returned to the old house she was looking at yesterday. She dusted
the old mailbox revealing the surname of the family that once lived
in that house. And it reveals that it's their family house. After she
left that place, soon after her family migrated to another country
and they put the house for lease or for sale. She opened the gates
with a key she have and walked around the house.
"It's
crumbling... No one bothered to buy this house..."
she said looking at
an old swing filled with rust and vines at her right.
She looked
at the window on the second floor. A broken glass was the first thing
she noticed. She remembered the reason for that broken glass. An
argument between her mother was the reason when she threw a picture
frame to the window breaking it. She looked for that particular
picture frame near the swing and found it half buried a few meters
from the swing. She unearthed it and dusted the glass. The picture is
slowly decaying. Upon careful looking it reveals Marie, her sister
and their parents. At that moment she realized all the things she had
done. And all the things she lost over the years because of her pride
and ego..
"I
have nothing left... He's right... But even though you push me away,
I'll try and go back closer to you. I don't care what it will cost...
I just want to be a part of your life in some other way... Mom
and dad disowned me already after all I did... You may hate me now
but I know you could still forgive me and I'll wait for that
day... This is the only place left for me to go back to."
she said and removed the for sale sign outside the gate.
She
smiled and dialed a number. Her boss.
"Hi. I'll
go with option B... I'll send you my resignation tomorrow morning."
she said.
"I
understand. Call me anytime if you need any help..."
"That
won't be necessary... Thank you for everything..."
she said and hanged up.
"I
have a lot of rebuilding to do..."
she said.
"I
hope I'm not doing a mistake... I'll start all over again only this
time I know where I'm headed. No more egos no more prides..."
she said and threw the for sale sign on a garbage bin outside the
gate. Locked it and went back to town.
"I'll
be back again and this time for good..."
she said.
The sky was clear that day that made her more
confident that something good will happen in the future.
"I'll
take my chances here..."
she said. A mild breeze blew her hat away, she just looked at her hat
as it flew away with the wind.
